Cultivating Change: Addressing Food Insecurity Through Community Agriculture
According to the CDC’s Social Vulnerability Index, residents within a 25-mile radius of The Newtown Church of Christ (1709 N. Decatur St., Montgomery, Alabama 36110) fall within Census Tract 3 of Montgomery County—one of the most vulnerable areas due to significant socioeconomic challenges, household composition disparities, and limited access to transportation. With a vulnerability score nearing 1, this community faces heightened risks, particularly in food insecurity among children, the elderly, and disabled populations.
Legacy Heritage recognizes that agriculture is more than just food—it is empowerment, sustainability, and resilience. To address this crisis, we propose a community-driven agricultural intervention that directly engages mothers and caregivers, who play a pivotal role in household nutrition decisions. By equipping them with knowledge in nutritious food production, sustainable gardening practices, and healthy meal preparation, we can shift behaviors that influence generational health outcomes.
This initiative will create pathways for:
Mothers to enhance their children's health through homegrown, nutrient-dense foods.
Caregivers to integrate fresh, wholesome produce into their daily care routines.
Families to adopt sustainable eating habits, supported by spouses and adult children.
The community to gain access to affordable, locally grown food, reducing reliance on unhealthy, processed options.
In response to the declining nutritional health of vulnerable populations in Census Tract 3—exacerbated by the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic--Legacy Heritage is sowing the seeds of change. Through hands-on training in a thriving community garden environment, we will not only provide food but empower individuals to cultivate their own solutions to food insecurity. By investing in knowledge, access, and behavior change, we aim to restore health, dignity, and self-sufficiency to the most at-risk members of our community.
🌿 Join us in growing a healthier future—one garden, one meal, one family at a time. 🌱
